Amulet of the Planes

- Category: Wondrous Item
- Rarity: Very Rare (Requires Attunement)
While wearing this amulet, you can take a Magic action to name a location that you are familiar with on another plane of existence. Then make a DC 15 Intelligence (Arcana) check. On a successful check, you cast Plane Shift. On a failed check, you and each creature and object within 15 feet of you travel to a random destination determined by rolling 1 d 100 and consulting the following table.

Tactical Applications
Travel Strategy: Provides unparalleled mobility across planes but requires careful planning due to the risk of random destinations. Best used when conventional travel is impossible or when rapid escape is necessary.
Class Synergies:
- Wizards and Sorcerers: Complements planar magic and can provide material components for other spells
- Clerics and Paladins: Enables missions to celestial planes or battles against extraplanar threats
- Warlocks: Facilitates contact with otherworldly patrons or escapes from planar enemies
Build Considerations: Most valuable for characters with high Intelligence (Arcana) skills and knowledge of multiple planes. Intelligence-boosting items become essential supplements.
Acquisition Methods
Crafting Requirements: Requires materials from multiple planes, master-level enchantment, and deep understanding of planar mechanics. Costs 25,000-40,000 gp and significant planar travel.
Common Sources:
- Ancient planar research facilities
- Rewards from extraplanar entities
- Inheritance from powerful planar travelers
- Hidden caches in locations touched by planar magic
Alternative Acquisition: Some planar trading posts offer these as prizes for completing cross-planar missions or as payment for services rendered to extraplanar beings.
Value & Trade
Estimated Value: 30,000-50,000 gp, though finding buyers with sufficient wealth and interest can be challenging.
Trade Considerations: Extremely valuable to planar researchers, extraplanar diplomats, and adventuring parties. Some planar entities might trade valuable services for such items.
Character Integration
Roleplay Elements: Possession suggests extensive planar knowledge and connections. Characters may be viewed as extremely powerful or potentially dangerous due to their mobility.
Character Concepts:
- Planar researcher studying the multiverse
- Former prisoner of an extraplanar entity who escaped
- Diplomatic courier between planar powers
- Survivor of a planar catastrophe seeking to return home
Adventure Hooks
The Planar Refugee Crisis: Mass displacement between planes creates chaos, and the party must use the amulet to coordinate rescue efforts across multiple realities.
The Broken Concordat: Ancient treaties between planes are failing, and the party must travel quickly between realms to prevent multiversal war.
The Lost Expedition: A previous group of adventurers used a similar amulet and disappeared; the party must trace their path through multiple planes to find them.
The Planar Smuggling Ring: Criminals use amulets to transport illegal goods between planes, and the party must infiltrate their network.
Variants & Customization
Precision Amulet of the Planes (Legendary): Allows targeting of specific locations on other planes with advantage on the Arcana check.
Networked Planar Amulet (Artifact): Multiple linked amulets that can transport wearers to each other's locations across planes.
Elemental Plane Amulet (Very Rare): Specialized for travel only to Inner Planes but provides resistance to that plane's environmental hazards.
Specialized Variants:
- Celestial Calling Amulet: Favors travel to good-aligned outer planes
- Infernal Transit Amulet: Optimized for travel to evil outer planes but with additional risks
- Feywild Wanderer's Amulet: Specializes in travel between the Material Plane and Feywild
Lore & History
Origins: Created by ancient archmages seeking to map the multiverse. The original creators established hidden research stations across multiple planes that still exist today.
Historical Significance: Several major historical events involved the use of planar amulets, including evacuations during planar invasions and diplomatic missions that prevented interdimensional wars.
Cultural Impact: Different planes regard these amulets differently. Some see them as tools of exploration, others as weapons of invasion or instruments of unwanted immigration.
Planar Politics: Possession of such an amulet may grant or revoke diplomatic immunity on certain planes, depending on current political situations.
Balancing Notes
Introduction Timing: Best introduced at levels 13+ when characters can handle the challenges of planar travel and the consequences of random destinations.
Campaign Impact: Fundamentally changes the scope of adventures, potentially making any plane accessible. Requires Creator preparation for planar encounters.
Risk Management: The random destination table ensures even successful uses carry risk, maintaining tension and preventing trivial travel.
Encounter Design
Recommended Challenges:
- Planar-specific environmental hazards and conditions
- Encounters with native creatures from various planes
- Political situations involving extraplanar entities
- Navigation challenges in unfamiliar realities
Tactical Adjustments: Enemies may attempt to trigger the amulet at disadvantageous times or trap characters on hostile planes.
Related Items
Planar Travel: Other items and spells that facilitate travel between planes or provide protection during such journeys.
Planar Protection:
- Environmental protection items for hostile planes
- Translation magic for communication with extraplanar beings
- Items that provide resistance to energy types common on other planes
