Traits
Amorphous. The jelly can move through a space as narrow as 1 inch without expending extra movement to do so.
Spider Climb. The jelly can climb difficult surfaces, including along ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
Actions
Pseudopod. Melee Attack Roll: +4, reach 5 ft. Hit: 12 (3d6+2) Acid damage.
Reactions
Split. Trigger: While the jelly is Large or Medium and has 10+ Hit Points, it becomes Bloodied or is subjected to Lightning or Slashing damage. Response: The jelly splits into two new Ochre Jellies. Each new jelly is one size smaller than the original jelly and acts on its Initiative. The original jelly's Hit Points are divided evenly between the new jellies (round down).
Lore & Background
Ochre jellies are massive, mindless oozes that consume everything in their path with their acidic bodies. These yellow-brown gelatinous creatures are among the most dangerous of the ooze family, capable of growing to enormous sizes and splitting into smaller versions of themselves when damaged. Ochre jellies are found in deep dungeons, caves, and other underground environments where they slowly patrol their territory in search of organic matter to dissolve and absorb.
These creatures are completely mindless, operating on pure instinct to feed and grow. They can sense vibrations and movement, allowing them to hunt effectively despite having no visible sensory organs. Their acidic nature makes them incredibly destructive to both living creatures and inanimate objects.
Combat Tactics
Ochre jellies rely on their pseudopod attacks and acidic body to damage enemies. Their split ability makes them particularly dangerous, as physical attacks can create multiple smaller threats. They pursue any source of movement or vibration relentlessly.
Encounter Ideas
Dungeon Cleaner: An ochre jelly has consumed most life in an ancient dungeon complex. Laboratory Accident: An alchemist's experiment created an ochre jelly that's now loose in the city. Underground River: An ochre jelly blocks passage through flooded tunnels. Treasure Guardian: An ochre jelly inadvertently guards treasure it has absorbed but not digested.
Environmental Effects
Ochre jelly presence leaves trails of acid damage on floors, walls, and ceilings. The area often smells of acid and decay, with partially dissolved organic matter scattered about.
Treasure
Ochre jellies don't intentionally collect treasure, but their bodies often contain metal objects, gems, and magical items that have resisted their acid. These items can be recovered after the creature's defeat.
Plot Hooks
The Growing Threat: An ochre jelly is slowly consuming an entire underground ecosystem. Acid Mine: Miners have accidentally released an ochre jelly from deep underground. The Split Problem: Heroes must find a way to destroy an ochre jelly without letting it split. Dungeon Ecology: An ochre jelly's presence is affecting the balance of an underground environment.
