Block and Tackle

Weight: 5 lb.
Cost: 1 GP
Category: Tool
Function: Lift 4x normal weight
Description
A block and tackle is a pulley system that provides mechanical advantage for lifting heavy objects. This essential tool consists of multiple pulleys arranged to multiply force, allowing adventurers to move objects that would otherwise be impossible to lift.
Usage Instructions
Setup: Secure the upper block to a stable anchor point above the object to be lifted. Attach the lower block to the load.
Operation: Pull the rope through the pulley system. The mechanical advantage allows you to lift up to four times your normal carrying capacity.
Weight Capacity: Can lift objects weighing up to 4 times your normal lifting capacity (Strength score × 30 lbs × 4).
Mechanical Advantages
Force Multiplication: Reduces the force needed to lift heavy objects by a factor of 4.
Controlled Movement: Provides precise control when lowering heavy items.
Safety: Rope can be secured to prevent accidental dropping of loads.
Tactical Applications
- Dungeon Exploration: Lift heavy stone blocks or iron gates
- Treasure Recovery: Extract heavy chests or statues
- Construction: Raise building materials or equipment
- Rescue Operations: Lift fallen party members from pits
- Ship Operations: Load and unload heavy cargo
Setup Requirements
Anchor Point: Requires a secure mounting point that can support the full weight of the load.
Space: Needs sufficient vertical clearance for the rope and pulley system.
Rope: Requires at least 50 feet of rope for most applications (rope sold separately).
Limitations
- Requires time to set up properly
- Needs a secure anchor point overhead
- Movement is slower than direct lifting
- Can be noisy during operation
- Vulnerable to rope damage
Maintenance
Inspect pulleys regularly for wear and proper rotation. Keep rope clean and check for fraying. Lubricate pulley wheels if they become stiff or noisy.
