Oil

Weight: 1 lb.
Cost: 1 SP
Category: Consumable
Special Properties: Fuel or coating, 5 Fire damage

Description

Oil is a versatile liquid fuel that serves multiple purposes in adventuring. Usually stored in a glass flask, it can be used as lamp fuel, thrown as an improvised weapon, or applied to surfaces to create slippery or flammable areas.

Usage Instructions

As Fuel: One flask of oil burns for 6 hours in a lantern or 24 hours in a lamp. The oil provides steady illumination without producing excessive smoke.

As a Weapon: You can splash oil on a creature or throw the flask as an improvised weapon. On a hit, the target takes 5 fire damage if the oil is ignited. The oil remains flammable for 1 minute.

Surface Application: Oil can be poured on the ground to cover a 5-foot square, making the area difficult terrain. If ignited, creatures entering or starting their turn in the area take 5 fire damage.

Tactical Considerations

Advantages:

  • Inexpensive and widely available
  • Multiple utility applications
  • Can create area denial when ignited
  • Effective against regenerating creatures
  • Useful for environmental puzzles

Limitations:

  • Requires ignition source for weapon use
  • Glass container is fragile
  • Creates fire hazard in enclosed spaces
  • Limited damage compared to alchemist's fire

Alternative Uses

  • Lubrication: Reduce friction on mechanical devices
  • Preservation: Protect metal items from rust
  • Tracking: Create slippery trails to slow pursuers
  • Signaling: Create smoke signals when burned
  • Crafting: Component for various alchemical recipes

Maintenance

Store in cool, dry places away from heat sources. Check glass containers regularly for cracks that could cause leaks. Oil can become rancid over time, affecting its burning properties.
