Staff (Arcane Focus)

Staff (Arcane Focus)

Category: Arcane Focus
Weight: 4 lb.
Cost: 5 GP
Usable By: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard

Description

A staff is a long, straight piece of wood, metal, or other material, typically 5-6 feet in length. It can serve both as a walking aid and as a focus for arcane spellcasting. Many staves are carved with intricate designs or topped with crystals or other ornaments.

Spellcasting Focus

An arcane focus is a special item designed to channel the power of arcane spells. A sorcerer, warlock, or wizard can use a staff as a spellcasting focus, allowing them to cast spells without needing most material components.

Quarterstaff Compatibility

A staff can also be used as a quarterstaff for combat purposes, dealing 1d6 bludgeoning damage (or 1d8 when used two-handed). This makes it both a practical tool and a defensive weapon.

Tactical Considerations

Advantages:

  • Doubles as both spellcasting focus and quarterstaff
  • Cheapest arcane focus option (5 GP)
  • Long reach provides leverage and utility
  • Impressive appearance for command presence
  • Can be used two-handed for increased damage

Limitations:

  • Heaviest focus option (4 lbs)
  • Requires significant space to maneuver
  • Difficult to conceal
  • Two-handed use prevents shield usage
