Rod (Arcane Focus)

Category: Arcane Focus
Weight: 2 lb.
Cost: 10 GP
Usable By: Sorcerer, Warlock, Wizard
Description
A rod is a scepter or just a heavy cylinder, typically made of metal, wood, or bone. It's wielded in one hand, unlike a staff, and serves as a focus for arcane spellcasting.
Spellcasting Focus
An arcane focus is a special item - an orb, a crystal, a rod, a specially constructed staff, a wand-like length of wood, or some similar item - designed to channel the power of arcane spells. A sorcerer, warlock, or wizard can use such an item as a spellcasting focus.
Tactical Considerations
Advantages:
- Replaces material components for spells (unless they have a cost)
- Can be used as an improvised weapon if needed (1d4 bludgeoning damage)
- More robust than a wand, less cumbersome than a staff
- Can be embedded with gems or magical materials for enhanced appearance
Limitations:
- Requires a free hand to use effectively
- Heavier than a wand (2 lbs)
- More expensive than a basic staff
- Can be sundered or stolen
Alternative Uses
- Improvised Weapon: Can be used to make melee attacks (1d4 bludgeoning)
- Walking Aid: Provides minor support when traversing difficult terrain
- Symbolic Authority: Impressive appearance for intimidation or leadership
- Tool: Can be used as a measuring stick or lever for light tasks
Care and Maintenance
- Clean regularly to maintain conductivity for magical energy
- Protect from extreme temperatures that might damage materials
- Store in a secure location to prevent theft
- Some rods may require special care based on their construction materials
Variants
- Metal Rods: Iron, silver, gold, or other metals for different magical properties
- Wooden Rods: Oak, ash, yew, or exotic woods with natural magical affinity
- Bone Rods: Dragon bone, giant bone, or other creatures for unique power
- Crystal-Tipped: Combining rod base with crystal focus points
