Bolts

Bolts

Category: Ammunition
Weight: 1½ lb. per 20 bolts
Cost: 1 GP per 20 bolts
Weapon Type: Crossbow ammunition

Description

Bolts are specialized projectiles designed for use with crossbows. Shorter and heavier than arrows, bolts are crafted for maximum penetrating power and accuracy when fired from crossbow mechanisms.

Usage

Ammunition: Bolts are consumed when fired from crossbows. Each attack with a crossbow expends one bolt. After combat, you can recover half of your expended bolts by spending 1 minute searching the battlefield.

Compatibility: Designed specifically for crossbows of all sizes, from hand crossbows to heavy crossbows.

Bolt Construction

Design Elements:

  • Length: 12-16 inches (shorter than arrows)
  • Weight: Heavier than arrows for penetrating power
  • Fletching: Shorter feathers or vanes for stability
  • Nock: Designed to fit crossbow string mechanisms

Materials:

  • Shaft: Hardwood (ash, oak) or metal
  • Point: Iron or steel for armor penetration
  • Fletching: Goose feathers or leather vanes
  • Nock: Reinforced for crossbow string pressure

Bolt Types

Standard Bolts:

  • General purpose ammunition
  • Good balance of cost and effectiveness
  • Suitable for most combat situations
  • Standard issue for military crossbowmen

Specialized Variants:

  • Bodkins: Narrow points for armor penetration
  • Broadheads: Wide blades for hunting applications
  • Blunt Tips: Non-lethal subdual damage
  • Fire Bolts: Wrapped tips for ignition

Performance Characteristics

Ballistic Properties:

  • Higher kinetic energy than arrows
  • Superior armor penetration
  • Shorter effective range than arrows
  • More consistent accuracy at close range

Combat Effectiveness:

  • Excellent against heavily armored targets
  • Devastating wounds from heavy crossbows
  • Reliable performance in various weather
  • Consistent damage output

Crossbow Compatibility

Hand Crossbow:

  • Uses lighter, shorter bolts
  • Optimized for close-range combat
  • Easier to conceal and carry
  • Reduced penetrating power

Light Crossbow:

  • Standard bolt size and weight
  • Good balance of power and portability
  • Suitable for most adventuring needs
  • Reliable accuracy at medium range

Heavy Crossbow:

  • Heavier bolts for maximum damage
  • Superior armor penetration
  • Longer effective range
  • Requires more strength to reload

Field Considerations

Recovery Rate:

  • 50% recovery rate after combat
  • Higher recovery in soft targets
  • Lower recovery from armored enemies
  • Weather and terrain affect recovery

Storage and Transport:

  • Use bolt cases or quivers
  • Protect points from damage
  • Keep fletching dry and intact
  • Organize by type for quick access

Manufacturing Quality

Professional Grade:

  • Precisely balanced for accuracy
  • Quality materials and construction
  • Consistent performance standards
  • Higher cost but superior reliability

Field Expedient:

  • Improvised from available materials
  • Reduced accuracy and penetration
  • Emergency replacement ammunition
  • May damage crossbow mechanisms

Economic Considerations

Cost Factors:

  • More expensive than arrows per shot
  • Specialized manufacturing requirements
  • Higher material costs for construction
  • Quality premium for military grade

Bulk Purchasing:

  • Reduced per-bolt cost in quantities
  • Standard military procurement
  • Adventure party supply planning
  • Trade goods in frontier areas
