Chain

Chain

Weight: 10 lb.
Cost: 5 GP
Category: Tool
Function: Bind creatures

Description

A 10-foot length of sturdy iron chain with heavy links. This versatile tool can be used to secure prisoners, anchor equipment, or create makeshift barriers. The chain is strong enough to restrain most humanoid creatures and resist casual attempts to break free.

Usage Instructions

Binding Creatures: Wrapping and securing a creature with the chain requires a successful grapple check. Once bound, the creature is restrained.

Escape Mechanics: A bound creature can attempt to escape with a DC 20 Strength check or DC 20 Dexterity (Acrobatics) check as an action.

Breaking the Chain: The chain has AC 19, 5 hit points, and immunity to psychic and poison damage.

Tactical Applications

  • Prisoner Restraint: Secure captured enemies or suspects
  • Equipment Security: Chain valuable items to prevent theft
  • Climbing Aid: Create anchor points for rope systems
  • Barrier Creation: Block passages or secure doors
  • Improvised Weapon: Can be used as a flail in desperate situations

Mechanical Properties

Durability: Iron construction resists most forms of damage Flexibility: Links allow the chain to wrap around irregular shapes Weight Distribution: Heavy enough to be effective but portable for adventurers

Specialized Uses

  • Naval Operations: Secure cargo or anchor ships
  • Construction: Temporary support for heavy objects
  • Traps: Component in mechanical trap systems
  • Intimidation: Display of authority or threat
  • Puzzle Solutions: Weight for counterbalance mechanisms

Limitations

  • Heavy and cumbersome to carry
  • Makes noise when moved
  • Requires additional securing mechanism (lock, rope, etc.)
  • Can rust if not properly maintained
  • Limited length restricts applications

Maintenance

Keep the chain clean and dry to prevent rust. Oil the links occasionally to maintain flexibility. Inspect regularly for weak or damaged links that might fail under stress.
