Hunting Trap

Weight: 25 lb.
Cost: 5 GP
Category: Tool
Function: DC 13 Dex save, 1d4 damage
Description
A hunting trap is a mechanical device with steel jaws designed to catch and hold creatures. When triggered, the powerful spring-loaded mechanism snaps shut, dealing damage and restraining the victim until they can escape or be freed.
Usage Instructions
Setting the Trap: Takes 1 action to set the trap in a 5-foot square. The trap is camouflaged and requires a DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check to spot.
Triggering: When a Small or larger creature enters the trapped square, they must make a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw.
Effect: On a failed save, the creature takes 1d4 piercing damage and is restrained. On success, they avoid the trap entirely.
Escape Mechanics
Breaking Free: A restrained creature can use an action to make a DC 13 Strength check to break free or pry open the trap.
Assistance: Another creature can help free the trapped victim, granting advantage on the Strength check.
Disabling: The trap can be disarmed with a successful DC 15 thieves' tools check.
Tactical Applications
- Area Denial: Control movement through corridors or passages
- Perimeter Security: Protect campsites or hideouts
- Hunting: Capture animals for food or mounts
- Combat Support: Slow pursuing enemies
- Interrogation: Capture enemies alive for questioning
Strategic Placement
Chokepoints: Narrow passages where enemies must pass Hidden Locations: Behind doors, under debris, or in tall grass Escape Routes: Block retreat paths during combat Resource Areas: Protect water sources or treasure caches
Limitations
- Heavy and difficult to transport multiple traps
- Single-use until reset
- Can be triggered by allies accidentally
- Visible to careful observers
- Ineffective against flying or incorporeal creatures
Legal Considerations
Many civilized areas have laws restricting trap use, especially in populated regions. Setting traps near roads or settlements may be illegal and could result in criminal charges.
Maintenance
Keep the spring mechanism clean and well-oiled. Check for rust or damage that might prevent proper operation. Reset carefully to avoid accidental triggering during transport.
